Well i got it booted in his laptop and it froze, it was working but it stopped, the mouse wont move, clicks do nothing, hmmm

It could just be a glitch. It could be a hardware fault.

I'd try it again. It's easy enough to do.

Maybe it wasn't a dead hard drive after all or the hard drive was just one issue?

i am rebooting it now. Windows comes up with an imminent hard drive failure warning every hour on verles laptop, but the hard drive shouldnt be doing anything right now

If you're booting to the USB the HDD isn't involved, though it will try to mount it.

Hmm... If it tries to mount a broken drive that might make it freeze.
