Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link (fngt.gq). That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should Poal go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, and you're a regular participant, then just ask COF, Crazy, or TheBuddha.

If you do know what's going on, you probably don't need to click that link - but you may want to, to make sure you know of the other features, such as the archive or a separate forum that's invite only.

Remember, we are guests here on Poal. Let's act like it. If you're interested in supporting Poal, then you can donate.

Whew, what a couple of weeks. The holidays have passed (take down the damn house lights, nobody wants to see them in July), politics are crazy, and we have a whole new year to tackle. Hold on, it's going to be a bumpy ride, but music will help see us through it all as always.

Last week I posted the following but it was late and deep in the thread, so I thought I'd post it again to get us started.

This week I'd like to feature a young woman of amazing skills many will know as Biff, TheBuddha's wife and resident covergirl (lucky bastard). She started out in the FNGT known as EH (Eldest Hoodlum).

This awesome woman has only been playing a little over 2 years now and in that time has become an outstanding guitarist, bassist, and audio engineer. She mixes and masters all of The Biff and TheBuddha Band tracks you hear in the FNGT. She also performs and does the master sound/boardwork for their regional live band.

Under TheBuddha's tutelage she quickly assumed the dedication of hours of daily practice, and the results are evident. She had adopted the idea of a quote by Freddie Mercury - "I won't be a Rock Star. I will be a Legend" - and, in my book, she already is.

So let's get started with a track by her she composed and performed barely 6 months after picking up a guitar.

Midterm (clyp.it)

Oh, she does enjoy roses being thrown.

Entirely off-topic...

I'm watching Motor Trend (the TV channel). They've got guys putting shit together from boxes and crates.

That's fine. You can build a pretty fucking awesome car that way.

Except, they keep calling themselves fabricators and builders.

No. Just no. No...

They're mechanics. They're not engineering anything. They're just assembling. They are working on a 57 'Vette. They put in a new frame - that they purchased. They put in a brake kit, that they purchased. They didn't even have to fabricate the brake lines. They're just bolting shit together.

That's fine. They can do that. It even requires skill - and even requires skill in making sure you get the right parts. They're good at it. They obviously are good at it, they've got a show on Motor Trend.

But they're not fabricating a goddamned thing. They're not building a car, they're assembling a car.

Shit, I bet they send it out for paint.

It's otherwise a great show. It's informative and the overwhelming majority of people should follow their guidelines to make their collector car dreams come true. But, they're not builders or fabricators. They're direction-following parts-assemblers. Don't put lipstick on a pig and tell me it's Ms. America.

Also, I hope you're enjoying your day.

I'm constantly reminded how fragile people's ego's are. As in this, portraying themselves to an elevated status, even though the correct description is sufficient for praise. I understand it somewhat, it's hard to stand out when everybody else is doing the same and everyone wants to feel special (just like everybody else).

There was a post yesterday asking people if they played a musical instrument, and what it was. I noted almost all that replied I didn't recognize from the thread. That doesn't mean they aren't being truthful but makes me question why they answered the post but still don't have a desire to share their music. As if they want to be known as a musician but don't "prove" it by joining an opportunity. I did see 2 users I recognized, one even commented by only posting a link to the thread.

Oh well, I'm far from exempt from issues myself and shouldn't judge others. I cite it as an example of the topic.

I'm anticipating my kids coming at 2 pm and think I have all prepared. These are the days I enjoy the most.

Again, unrelated - but possibly of medium importance...

If I disappear, it's the goddamned hotel's internet going down again. It went down at 11:50 and was restored at 13:57. (I happened to look at my phone, so I know the time.)

Seriously...

This is a goddamned luxurious hotel. How the fuck can they not keep the 'net up and running?!?

Also, I learned that I'm technically not in Norfolk. There's a greater metropolitan area, including Virginia Beach, and I'm not actually in Norfolk. Huh... Things I learned.

I'm still gonna say I'm in Norfolk, 'cause that's ingrained and close enough.

What they were doing was perfectly acceptable, respectable, and takes quite a degree of skill to do properly.

I wanna be a lion.
Everybody wanna pass as cats.
We all want to be big big stars,
But we got different reasons for that.

Ah well...

It's 'cold' here and will be for a while. It's like 40° here. It'll warm up to a max high in the low 50s at the end of next week. Other than that, it's expected to be below 50° until Thursday.

[–] 1 pt

(lucky bastard)

Damned right.

[–] 1 pt

This is fucking rocking the house. We got this playing on 11 and they are headbanging!

[–] 0 pt

Reminder: You have the thread this coming Friday.

[–] 0 pt

thanks for the reminder cause I completely forgot

[–] 5 pts

Hey, sorry I can’t still around to hang out. Here’s what I felt like recording Thai https://soundcloud.com/user-769347170/keep-your-rifle-by-your-side

[–] 3 pts

Far Cry 5 has the most relevant soundtrack.

I love this, so much.

Thank you.

[–] 2 pts

Hell yeah man. I’ve got a big old white pickup that I’m tempted to throw a Peggie cross on the side of just to fuck with people haha. After this week though this song has been quite on my mind.

[–] 2 pts

This is cool. I got it cranked and theres a bunch of people getting drink and playing poker who have no choice but to listen, Its awesome. Thanks for playing this its fucking cool

[–] 2 pts

Thanks, that’s awesome! It’s just a cover and I usually like to do original stuff more but this song has just been on my mind a lot lately.

[–] 1 pt

Stop back by when you have time, the thread is stickied all week. Listening now, so far very nice.

[–] 1 pt

I should when I have time this afternoon!

[–] 1 pt

throws horns

[–] 2 pts

Catches horns Thank you sir

[–] 1 pt

That's my standard greeting in the real world.

If someone waves to me, or if I wave to someone else, it's actually me throwing horns.

I've been doing that for decades.

[–] 4 pts

Hey guys, happy Friday. I hope we've all made it through another work week relatively unscathed.

Here's another song by me and my pal from about 25 years ago. He came over and said he was working on a song. I hit record on the jambox, then picked up the bass and tried to follow along. He called out the chord changes as we went. The bass is badly out of tune, so if you have sensitive ears, you might want to skip this one.

Shootout (soundcloud.com) by Courtney's Love Hole. One take, written as it was recorded, never performed again.

[–] 2 pts

Ah, same session as the last one?

[–] 3 pts

Maybe. We spent a lot of late night Saturdays over a two year period, sometimes doing the spontaneous stuff, sometimes just multitracking his personal stuff.

I heard through a mutual acquaintance that he's doing pretty well selling "trance" and "house" tunes to a European market, and his releases are only available on cassette.

[–] 2 pts

I've never been a huge fan of the electronic music, or sampled music stuff like trance, house, or trap. I recognize that it takes skills, but I just can't get into it.

[–] 2 pts

I just played this on full blast for several people, and it was noisy and clangy and loud as fuck and every body is saying what to each other as i type this, LoL cool music

[–] 2 pts

Nice, almost sounds like a dobro. Clicks right along.

[–] 3 pts

I did this when Buddha posted it on Voat. It was fun trying to phrase it like the guy on Pink Floyd. Didn't know it had all those phrasings. Another great track that Buddha Band posted.

Singing along to Wish You Were Here.

Wish You Were Here w scaryoke vocalist (voca.ro)

[–] 2 pts

To make sure he see's this

@TheBuddha

[–] 1 pt

Sweet! It's great when folks sing to our tracks. We wish folks did more of it.

[–] 1 pt

That's pretty damn good. I'm really glad you did this and shared. Love it when people on here collaborate.

[–] 2 pts

Thanks man. I'm always reluctant to post these because the tracks he makes are so good and I feel like an asshole highjacking it. But sometimes you just gotta say fuck it. Felt like doing "Time" done by the two girls in Buddha's band when it was first posted but I chickened out. Noticed you posted it today.

[–] 1 pt

That's a one of the main purposes of the thread, to encourage people to enjoy and share music, and collaborating together is even better. Kind of a on-line jam session. I know Buddha has often said he enjoys when people use his work, but I'm sure he'll tell that himself when he hears this. It would seem to me to be a great compliment.

Since we're here every Friday, you have plenty of time for you to grab Biff and J's track and sing away. Go for it.

[–] 3 pts

I borrowed one of @TheBuddha ‘s instrumental tracks after Eddie passed away, and added some vocals to it. I couldnt log onto Voat that week, and forgot all about it. I just saw the file on my computer so I figured I’d share it tonight.

Runnin With the Devil https://vocaroo.com/1buPDoz2pO77

[–] 3 pts

I know, it's fun singing along with those dynamite tracks The Buddha Band makes. All you gotta do is sit back and come in and wail when it's time.

Loved it.

[–] 2 pts

Yeah it’s pretty great. Makes my job super easy!

[–] 2 pts

Hell yeah man! Got this on full blast and everybody is singing along with you, great screams

[–] 2 pts

Thanks dude! It was fun to scream haha

[–] 2 pts

Verle says your voice is not rough enough!

[–] 2 pts

Wow, totally rocks! You've got Dave's screams down pat. Fantastic!

[–] 2 pts

Thanks COF! I found his isolated vocal track online, which helped a ton, so I was able to get pretty close to his.

[–] 2 pts

I love it when folks build off our work. It sounds like you were having a hell of a time.

[–] 2 pts

Yeah I was laughing quite a bit when I thought about what those high spit he’s shreaks must’ve sounded like outside of my headphones. It was a fun song to sing. Thanks for the excellent tracks to work with.

[–] 2 pts

Thanks! We try to do our best each week.

Well, we're on vacation this week. We're on vacation for the remainder of January - maybe a bit longer.

We always take January off. Even if able, we don't even go out and perform with the band during the month of January. It's our vacation.

[–] 3 pts (edited )

Continuing on with my theme, Here's a couple of Biff with her friend and fellow bandmate J, another fantastic young woman. Performing as Two Young Ladies Band, here's:

Pink Floyd - Time (Biff #1; J B) (clyp.it)

Black Sabbath - Iron Man (share.fngt.gq)

[–] 1 pt

Which one got nailed?

[–] 2 pts

Iron Man. I edited it.

[–] 1 pt

Ah, okay.

I was gonna upload it to my private share account and fix it.

[–] 3 pts

Here's one from that same weekend, but it's got vocals and wasn't recorded from the soundboard. This was just a cell phone recording made by my wife - who was not my wife at that point in time.

03.15.19 [BDE] Landslide.mp3 (share.fngt.gq)

For the curious, that's J singing. I don't think that's actually me on guitar. I think that was a song we did while changing the stage, getting me a stool and moving my mics into position for the rest of the set. I think... I'm not really sure, 'cause that was a long time ago in my world.

[–] 3 pts

She just doesn't quit being wonderful and amazing, all her multi-instrumental skills and a great voice too.

(I'm still enthralled, damn it).

[–] 2 pts

She's got mad skills.

I was just talking about the joy that it is to play with the band. Screw the money, one of my greatest luxuries is being in a position to choose the people who are close to me. I get to choose who I associate with. Playing with the band is a real joy.

[–] 2 pts (edited )

Helo everybody, and thanks COF for opening the thread tonight. My friend verle had his house he lives in destroyed by fire last night, so that sucks, here is a song him and I jammed out from last weekend at his house before the fire was... blues jam (files.catbox.moe)

edit

actually thats not the song here (soundcloud.com) is the song

[–] 2 pts

Damn bro that’s awful to hear about Verles house.

[–] 2 pts

yeah its sucks, but what can you do. Got to make the best of it and move on, At least nobody got hurt.

[–] 2 pts

Yeah that’s a great perspective to have. Glad you guys are rocking regardless!

[–] 1 pt

You posted the pic (horrible) but do you have the song also?

[–] 1 pt

what? ok i will find the song

blues jam (soundcloud.com)

sorry about that

[–] 1 pt

Ah, it has a link now. The first time I saw this, it had no link - except to a picture.

Sweet!

And appropriate that it was the blues before the place was destroyed.

[–] 1 pt

Yeah i fucked it up earlier.

[–] 1 pt

I see. Ah well, 'tis fixed now.

[–] 2 pts

Here's another from Biff, just jamming some Blues. It was mainly a demo of how to stack boxes and use them.

Biff - Tscrunky (foolin around with the blues) (hulkshare.com)

[–] 1 pt

'pedals' or 'stompboxes' might make more sense to folks. ;-)

She was doing a quick study in the benefits of stacking stompboxes to get a variety of tones. The primary pedal was a tube screamer.

[–] 1 pt

This is the end of that weekend.

03.17.19 [bde] set #3 improv end.mp3 (share.fngt.gq)

They represent an altogether too brief moment in time, when we got to really let loose at a blues bar. We don't get to do so very often. As you can see, we really enjoy it when we can.

Sadly, I no longer have the recordings of the remainder of that weekend. Those three are the only three remaining, unless I send a drive out to be recovered. In theory, it's backed up somewhere but I've never found the backups.

That's okay. Music is sometimes best when transient. It's the blues, there's always more and they can be recreated in spirit easily enough.

[–] 1 pt

this one is playing now, full blast. Its cool that you went and rocked it out in addition to the awesome blues jams. Fucking incredible!

[–] 1 pt

That one would have been how we ended the night. That was our encore, as memory serves and the title indicates.

[–] 1 pt (edited )

We're on vacation. As is tradition, kinda, we always take the month of January off. It just seems to happen...

That's okay, we've got something special.

We're going to take a step back to 2019.

My band had been brought in to play a blues club down in Lewiston, Maine. It turned out going so well that they paid a significant sum to keep us there all weekend, largely leaving us to make our creative decisions.

We don't get a lot of chances to go off-prompter. We don't get to do a lot of improv work. We sure as fuck don't usually get paid to play improv blues without a set list. So, this was a very special weekend for us and for our audiences.

03.15.19 [bde] set #3 track #7.mp3 (share.fngt.gq)

Rock on, poalr bears. Rock on.

[–] 3 pts

Damn dude that's some "Super Session" type of guitar playing.

[–] 1 pt

We got to do it pretty much all weekend long.

We did very little or our normal material and the rest was improv work.

It was fantastic for us. The crowds also enjoyed it. Glad ya liked it.

[–] 2 pts

Is this set 3 track 7?

[–] 1 pt

It is. I kinda forgot that folks can't read the code in the URL.

[–] 1 pt (edited )

Didn't even see that, I went by the length. Mind if I call it Blues Jam (BDE Live Set 3 Track 7)?

[–] 1 pt

I could sit and listen to you play like this for hours. I would really love to play the bass or rhythm guitar along with you as you do that some day. Freaking awesome stuff man, we all love it

[–] 1 pt

It was a lovely weekend for us. We had people coming in from other bars, just because the music was better. We packed the place so full that there were like a hundred people on the sidewalk. We did so from Friday night until Sunday evening - our last show being upstairs on a Sunday afternoon. They're a two-story bar setup in Auburn, Maine.

We've been back just once.

[–] 1 pt

I can see why, that was so fucking good. We're listening to that again as i type this, its so fucking good. Man its fucking awesome.
