The current variants are maybe 12 mutations away from the original virus. That's not much, the gain-of-function research has created a highly optimized virus that cannot mutate much without losing its function. Scientists have now created an artificial virus based on Delta with 4 additional mutations in a small area (called Delta 4+), something almost impossible to happen in nature (one mutation here and there, but not 4 at once). They could show that these mutations not only enhance infectivity, but allow the virus to evade vaccine induced immunity. So what, why should we panic? Because they will release this artificial variant into the wild?
