I've got an electric ice cream maker. You freeze the pot and then pop it in there and it just turns it and mixes. It's so easy and makes the best ice cream ever with zero shit added.
The one we had, you used a hand crank to turn the "pot". You got ice and salt (to make the ice go below freezing) then you had to crank the hell out of it for a long while in intervals. The ice cream it made was really, really, good from my memory (or maybe it was just because it was a pain in the ass to make as a small kid). I don't see a problem with it requiring work to do. It helps burn off some of the sugar/cals you are going to eat from it. It didn't make that much either, enough for 3-4 people to have one good serving depending on how old they were.
I just discovered that you can get an ice cream maker bowl for the kitchenaid stand mixer!!! I'm overly excited.
