The one we had, you used a hand crank to turn the "pot". You got ice and salt (to make the ice go below freezing) then you had to crank the hell out of it for a long while in intervals. The ice cream it made was really, really, good from my memory (or maybe it was just because it was a pain in the ass to make as a small kid). I don't see a problem with it requiring work to do. It helps burn off some of the sugar/cals you are going to eat from it. It didn't make that much either, enough for 3-4 people to have one good serving depending on how old they were.
I just discovered that you can get an ice cream maker bowl for the kitchenaid stand mixer!!! I'm overly excited.
