The problem is keeping track of continually shifting information. It's sort of why a centralized economy doesn't work very well, there's just too much to keep track of.
I could see a site tracking major brands at least. But then, that's basically everything made in these days of "socially/morally responsible totally-not-owned-by-government-jews monopolies."
