There are some strange instances, such as female lizards that, in the absence of male partners, can reproduce effectively clones of themselves (which are all female) and some species of fish that can change from female to male if the male of their group dies, however the sex of fish is not chromosomally determined, it is determined by temperature. A significant factor here is that while a few species can change from male to female. They are always either one or the other, they do not change into some third gender, or something in-between (though they may briefly transit between the two states). Sexually reproducing animals are bimodal, there is always a female gamete (large and low mobility) and a male gamete (smaller and high mobility).
