How can you tell what is poisonous or not?
i’m not a stellar mycologist, but i’m confident in identifying C.O.W. they look like this and grow on oak trees in late summer in the northeast
stellar mycologist
I read this weird and literally interpreted it as star mushrooms.
I'm just joking around. They look like pancakes. I don't eat wild mushrooms.
Oh I really thought you were doing that 😅
You can also get an app where you take a picture of it and it will identify it for you. If it's not 100% sure it'll show you multiple pictures of multiple possibilities. Luckily, it's not like playing Russian roulette - there are a few absolutely unmistakable varieties of muchrooms that are safe to eat.
If you're unsure, don't eat it.
If it's a survival situation and you might NEED to eat it, take a bite and then wait a few hours and see if you have any negative side effects.
I was skeptical of using that type of app but since you recommended it I'll try it one day. Thx
One rule of thumb some fun guy told me was don’t eat white gills, white veils or red anywhere on it.
I’m not sure how accurate those rules are though, I only eat shrooms I pick in the woods I know for sure are safe like morels.
That guy doesnt know what hes talking about. Hes passing a mixture of superstition and mediocre woods lore off as knowledge. Dont rely on that kind of info. My dad, same way about the veils. I brought home several good prince mushrooms and he insisted they were poisonous because of the membraneous veils. My mom and i ate them. He missed out.
Do you smell the mushroom to see if it smells like piss or crap before you eat it? Do you clean It with water?
I always wash them, soak them in cold water for a while then rinse again. All kind of stuff comes off, bugs, dirt, etc.
Then I slice em up and sauté em in a pan. Delish!
