What’s the name of that one?

chicken of the woods

chicken of the woods

The chicken of the woods amazingly contains around 14g of protein per 100g of mushroom! Unlike crappy other mushrooms eaten for flavor, that mushroom can help you live.

https://ultimatemedicinalmushrooms.com/4-chicken-of-the-woods-nutrition-facts/

Normal people at normal temperatures should eat 0.8 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight, so its not impossible to live on those long enough to escape the woodlands on a long trek.

I would have named them pancakes of the woods

The mushrooms weren't THAT big.

Winner winner what's for dinner?

MMMmmm... Pancake tree! Now if you can find a maple you can have syrup too.

(Though from the title, I thought maybe you'd found a pile of dirt. Ah, well...)

Good find. Tasty little morsels.

Great find! I forage for mushrooms as much as I can and got a small amount of chicken of the woods. Cut into strips and marinated overnight, grilled them the next day with veggies. I found a lot of oyster mushrooms this year for some reason....

What part of the world do those grow?

[–] 2 pts

i am in the northeast usa. they like hardwood trees, specifically oaks.

So am I. I rarely see them, and when I do they're tiny. Fuck, man. I've been on the hunt for chaga with zero luck too.

North America, Cascadia

Ah, I am in the Great Lakes region and have never seen those, thanks

What do you do with those? Just eat it?

[–] 4 pts

cut into strips and cook em up. there are recipes and stuff online

Does it taste like wood?

Tastes like chicken. Many cut them into strips, batter and fry just like chicken strips

You need a pat of butter and some maple syrup.

How can you tell what is poisonous or not?

i’m not a stellar mycologist, but i’m confident in identifying C.O.W. they look like this and grow on oak trees in late summer in the northeast

I'm just joking around. They look like pancakes. I don't eat wild mushrooms.

You can also get an app where you take a picture of it and it will identify it for you. If it's not 100% sure it'll show you multiple pictures of multiple possibilities. Luckily, it's not like playing Russian roulette - there are a few absolutely unmistakable varieties of muchrooms that are safe to eat.

If you're unsure, don't eat it.

If it's a survival situation and you might NEED to eat it, take a bite and then wait a few hours and see if you have any negative side effects.

One rule of thumb some fun guy told me was don’t eat white gills, white veils or red anywhere on it.

I’m not sure how accurate those rules are though, I only eat shrooms I pick in the woods I know for sure are safe like morels.

Since no one has commented on it yet, that picture looks heavenly with the sunlight bouncing the color of the shroom around on the tree.

[–] 2 pts

No but seriously. You can eat that raw right? What does it taste like? Dry it first maybe?

[–] 2 pts

no you really should to cook them. they have a similar texture to chicken. they are like a chicken-y mushroom

Nice find! Also I have to chuckle that chicken of the woods abbreviates to C.O.W.
