I know a master wood worker who had one arm. He built the most beautiful french doors I've ever seen.
Sounds like a badass.
He wrecked his truck drunk driving when he was about 30 and got his arm ripped off. He slipped into being an alcoholic for a few years. His wife took the kids and left. Then, he picked himself up and started building special-made doors and windows in his garage and made a damn good living at it. Before this he was a carpenter. He's in his late 70's and still does it. He has a wooden arm with a hook on it and does everything like normal. Good guy, too.
I of course don't know the fine details... but being in a wreck, having your arm torn off and being left with only one arm is a massively traumatizing experience. One could say he lost his family because he became an alcoholic, but it all revolves around a very bad occurrence. I feel like a good wife would truly understand that and would stick by and help their husband through "thick and thin". Let's seem he has a super fucked experience and is now dealing with not being able to do things and he is so hurt that he has to drink to dull the pain. How about taking his family away just to put the nail in the coffin! So fucked up, I see the possible reverse of an alcoholic husband and father, but still without knowing the details, I think it's fucked up of the wife.
Hopefully he lost his non-dominant arm...
