I used too. However spending weeks building a base, to log in and see it razed is a bit disheartening.

Disheartening is putting it lightly, lol. People are fucking savages on those servers, fucking hell. My personal thing to do is play PVE with higher difficulty. It can get boring after a while, but the game can fuck you just fine all by itself when it gets the mind to. Fucking alpha raptors

I've always felt that Ark is over-rated.

I much prefer more realistic survival games—just my opinion.

[–] 1 pt

My only retort is, fucking dinosaurs man!! You gotta admit it's kinda neat hunting dinos and riding them. I'm getting into the survival genre more and more, Stranded Deep is another I liked. You have any suggestions I should look at?

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

The Long Dark if you want a very inforgiving environment, slow game play, a nice art style and soundtrack, and a great, and I mean great community.

Otherwise, Green Hell? I've only ever seen footage but it seems like a very solid, down-to-earth survival game with more action than other games.

But yea, I guess dinosaurs are pretty cool.

lol, I'm glad we can agree on that. Thank you for the info, I'll look into these.

I'm all about survival games. I loved Green Hell, Subnautica (first one, second one went woke), The Long Dark - really good, Raft - this will definitely interest you as it's a slightly different take but still a straight-up survival.

I really want to try raft, it looks like a challenge. I haven't heard of the other 2 before, thank you I'll look into them. I forgot about Subnautica, that was pretty fun. I haven't tried the second one though. No good huh?

Subnautica (first one, second one went woke)

Wasn't the first one super woke too?

I recall one of the devs having a meltdown about people wanting proper guns in the game because "this is the future all guns are banned because we are science based progressives not 2nd amendment loving incel chuds!"

Also the sound guy (aka the most talentedp erson on the team) got fired for some stupid reason.

i play Rust which is quite similar. not as many dinosaurs but pretty fun when played with a group of friends

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

i played a little a while back but recently i got the game Rust which is very similar and only 40$. it is alot of fun but only because i play with alot of nerds who take the game way too seriously.

[–] 1 pt

You're the second person to suggest that, I keep forgetting to look it up. Thank you.

if you get the game hit me up and ill see if i can help you get started on our server. the game isnt less brutal than Ark but still very fun in my opinion

[–] 0 pt

I will, thank you! I'm on a gaystation though. You?

[–] 1 pt

It's been a long time since I played how do you go about liquidation of said peguins

[–] 0 pt

Lol, it's nothing special, but it's hilariously brutal in my opinion. Since they give you polymer I start breeding them in a stud farm. 1 male to 7 or 8 females. Since they insulate temperature when you're near, they can incubate their own eggs, so I just put a feeding trough near so they don't starve when they hatch. I can separate the non breeding stock at my leisure and when I need a lot of polymer I grab 15 wooden clubs and a shotgun and go collect. The fun part is I build a really cozy little death camp to keep them all in. I need to fully document it and upload it.

AHH that seems like a decent set-up, now only if they had a mod for tribes that you could conquer and put into prison camps

[–] 0 pt

It'd be cool if there were AI rival tribes too. Wouldn't be hard to add probably. And you could piggy back off the taming format for..."obedience". I think it could be done by someone who had the inclination, lol.

Rust.

[–] 0 pt

I have heard of Rust but have never looked into it, thank you for the tip.

The game was okay, hated multiplayer. Playing alone solo was nice, it was what you expect from any other game of its type. What I hated was how fiddly the monsters were to the point where they always got stuck in some crevice

It is a very buggy game that's for sure. My first T-Rex glitched halfway into the ground and I couldn't get him out no matter what I tried, it was disappointing as you can imagine. It was my biggest accomplishment at the time lol. Despite all its irritating qualities, I rather enjoy single player or just not being on populated servers. High level carnivores can keep the game interesting without a 100% chance of all your shit being destroyed every time.

I started a dedicated server with my brothers and friends in Valheim, if you want to pvp just build a fight pit or arena and duel or do squad battles, other than that it's a great game

I’ll have to give it a try sometime. I love the game in single player but it’s about impossible to complete some things solo. I have to get creative with problem solving sometimes

[–] 1 pt

How did you get into it? Played it for like an hour and I had to quit after realizing just how damn grindy it is.

Knew a girl that played a shit ton of it once and she was absolutely MASSIVE (see to get an idea). Anyway, having to sit on your ass and babysit a fucking digital dino for hours for the possibility of taming it is not my cup of tea.

Sorry for ranting out my ass, I genuinely just don’t get the appeal.

It is a bit of a grind getting established and familiar with the mechanics. But it's not so bad once you start taming animals that are useful tools. Certain creatures have passive abilities that help you out a lot and other creatures have the ability to gather particular resources effectively and that seriously cuts down on the grind time when used effectively. I have really only played single player so I have been able to take my time plugging away over months in my free time. My game play style is more relaxed than others I've seen. I just kinda developed a system of partial grind and partial exploration that kept me satisfied with development. There is some serious no life players out there that have apparently spent solid weeks and months just playing and grinding up to pointless levels. I don't see the appeal in that, I like the feeling of vulnerability. I honestly got hooked after one particular session devolved into a long run and gun scenario through a jungle at night, it was so chaotic and fun that I was hooked. Fucking dinos popping up all over can make things unpredictable. All that being said, your criticisms are valid and accurate. The taming is the worst part, it's such a boring process. I have figured out some methods to eventually create a self sustaining breeding program for all creatures, similar to my description of the penguin camp.
