Well, I guess someone has to do upkeep on the machines, and there's always those people who watch the machines to allow people to buy alcohol and whatnot. Besides, Walmart is so damn cheap that my local walmart never has more than 3-5 cashier lanes open at the most, despite having like 16+ lanes available.
