I generally power off my phone between 9AM and 6PM on weekdays to avoid the telemarketer scammers calling several times a day. Sometimes I'll turn it on, and when it's a telemarketer, I say stuff like

How does your mother feel about you being a criminal?
Does she know how low you've sunk, every day trying to steal from people? What would she say if she knew what you are doing? Wouldn't she be horrified? Won't your family be dishonored when they learn that you are a good-for-nothing thief? Aren't you embarrassed to have this kind of job? Can you not find honest work? How do you live with yourself?

People so starved for attention and validation that they can't bear to turn the ringer off and check it on their own schedule.

I heard some NPC DJ on the radio say that she is often late because she can't leave home unless her phone is 60% charged. The prospect of a dead phone makes her life revolve around a charger. These are the oxygen theives we share the planet with.
