To add to this, the default rate for people who complete college is quite low. Even for worthless degrees in navel-gazing. Going off of memory, ~92% of all student debt defaultees never completed even an associates degree. ?5%? of the remainder only completed an associates.
Almost all student loan defaults are the result of someone who shouldn't have gone to college being there. Either due to excessively low entrance requirements letting incompetents in or apathy on the part of the student.
The financial aid is what keeps the low level mid wits slurping at the debt trough. You get just enough money to get by without a job if you live at home or have roomates. Thankfully I had a fucking awful anthropology professor my second semester of freshman year that made me say fuck this and drop out. Best decision of my life had I stuck with it I'd be a wage slave and wouldnt have time to be writing this right now lol.
The same sort of thing happened to me, although it was a series of professors, and their absolute carelessness with grading. That made me realize I was paying thousands per year just to get a degree that meant less than nothing as asshats were passing because professors were too lazy to give a failing grade.
It could be worse, like a 100% graduation rate, which means that every idiot ends up with a university degree and those who truely deserve one end with a degree that's worthless.
