Why would you assume that? He obviously played fair, gave Johny the benefit of the doubt as to whom won [I think the Devil won] and let Johny talk shit at the end. He, more than likely, won it from someone else.

Why in this story does the devil always play fair? Isn't that the opposite of what he's supposed to do?

He doesn't have to live up to your expectations, maybe everything you've been told about him is propaganda?
IF the story were factual you see he interacts with honor and integrity, if someone is so overconfident on their skills that they would be willing to bet a gold fiddle with their soul then maybe THEY'RE the ones whose motives need to be questioned!
