Ever hear of a movie called Dark City? It's basically the Matrix, except it came out a few years earlier on a lower budget, and instead of machines, it's.... well, I won't spoil it, because it's a fantastic movie that I believe is commentary similar to how the Matrix was.

If you watch Dark City make sure it's the director's cut or else skip skip the first 10min. You see, for the original release someone thought the audience was too stupid to understand the movie so there is a narration that spoils the plot.
