Cowshit doesn't smell that bad. Most herbivores aren't terrible about shit smell (because of all the fiber.) HUMAN shit is what makes them (and the river) smell so bad, along with all the spices and WTF in the food.
They probably smell better after being covered in cowshit than they did when they walked in.
