I always kind'a wondered what the jewelry would have looked like if the Romans had decided to go by a different method, or perhaps been a bit more technologically advanced. Christians walking around wearing little gold hangman's nooses, or little gold miniature guillotines, or little gold miniature electric chairs on gold chains around their necks. Definitely would change the whole nature of the display behind the altars.
