PJ O'Rourke was never the flat out funny humorist that Michael O'Donoghue or Doug Kenny were, but he had a keen eye for satire and social commentary. Typical of his generation he went from flower loving hippie to staunch conservative over his career as he recognized that the Peace Love Dope attitude of the 60s was un-tenable and unrealistic. I remember him from the heydays of the National Lampoon; not so much as a great writer but more as someone who got it where 'it' was somewhat boring and pedestrian but an accurate commentary of American life and perspective.
