AFAIK he had quit taking smack and was trying to get himself straight.

Yeah, that's true too.

I mean it this time!

But there's a pretty long list of rock stars who discover they're being used and decide to try and get out of the business while they're young, then end up dead. My guess is that it has to do with (((producers))) taking out big life insurance policies and cashing out rather than have their income dry up.
