is this some remake? i remember the monkey was of the kinda that dances around in a suit and fez like a little jackass while its owner plays music, not a cymbal monkey toy.

Nah I think Im wrong, it probably was Puppetmaster as u/PawpawTree said. Monkey Shines just has one of those toy monkeys on the movie poster.
