It's truly amazing, because the guy in the black shorts, Dominic Cruz, has been the most dominant bantemweight fighter up till this fight. Cruz beat *all* of Cody's teammates throughout the years (Team Alpha Male). TAM just couldn't produce a fighter with a gameplan that could defeat Cruz. Until this fight. Cody Garbrandt went in there, carrying the weight of his entire team's pride on his shoulders.. and then he put on this incredible performance against one of the greatest fighters of all time. He beat him in every aspect: he dominated in striking, was defensively sound, precise, and even threw in some beautiful takedowns. All while styling on Cruz and taunting him. Cruz, in an interview, admitted that the taunting got him thrown off. You can see it in the fight, Cruz was clearly getting frustrated because he just couldn't land a clean shot on Cody. This led to him becoming a little desperate, reaching for punches in bad positions and thus exposing himself to *hard* counter punches. That beautiful kick caught Cruz ducking, split his eyebrow open- this affected his vision. Blood, vaseline, and sweat in your eye will fuck up your depth perception. He's throwing punches when he is not in range, so he gets countered. Unfortunately, Cody lost 3 fights in a row after this: all by stoppage. He got knocked out by his former teammate TJ Dillashaw, twice, and then he got submitted IIRC. Cody ducks all the way down like he's about to lunge in for a takedown, but Raphael recognizes it is just a feint, so he throws a low right hook. Cody rises up, causing Raphel's punch to miss while he launches that right hand from his back pocket, right over the incoming punch and right on the button. He turns his entire body into the punch, absolutely devastating.
