They didn't in Texas when I got one. And that was 20 years ago at this point. You didn't have to freeway drive, either. Honestly, you didn't have to do a whole lot. If you were <18 you had to go to driving school where they taught all that stuff (although it still wasn't on the test) If you were >=18, you did not.

I remember just forging "hours practiced" with a liscenced driver and then sitting a 15 minute multiple choice test at the DMV. No school, no practical test, in TX at 16. Fucked up part is that liscence transfered to an immediate liscence granted overseas, even though the driving standards are way higher over here.

Oh yeah I forgot about the "home school" method. I guess if a driving school can administer your driving test then so can your Mom
