Gorillas are not the most closely related primate species to humans. I don't actually think that humans ever existed in a state where a tribe consisted of one large male with a harem of females. Though we are prone to having chieftains, it's a bit more nuanced than "the alpha male"

In fact the more polygamous a society, the greater the degree of sexual dimorphism between males and females. Northern Europeans, perhaps the most monogamous people on earth, have huge females relative to males compared to other groups.

Thats naive. Other primates are really not that far away from us genetically. We share most of the same genes controlling these behaviors.
Do you really think behavior of female gorillas and chimipanzees doesn’t have anything to do with the behavior of female europeans?
