Semantics
Call it whatever you want, the coin code CAN be changed and is therefore NOT SECURE at all. Thus far there has not been a 51% attack on any coin of note, but that will change when the economics or political, etc impetus to do so arrives.
Ok, that's what's great about bringing the free market to money. EasyDNS just , they just recently picked up litecoin. If a coin gets "hacked" we can change it out. The alternative is centralized fiat, which was hacked in 1911. We've been living with that hack for over 100 years and we don't have too anymore. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
Just switch to another insecure coin
Fuck the FEd!
Ja, Ja, I get the whole alternate monetery supply idea, but I think the current ones around are not that. As a matter of fact, I think that if The Powers That Be did not invent Bitcoin, they are laughing until they piss their fucking pants that someone did it for them. It is precisely what is required to transition to a Cashless Society. To maintain the Status Quo of Vice, Crime, Graft, and Corruption of our current system when every transaction can be traced by Big Brother, an alternate quasi anonymous currency is needed. Plebs need a way to engage in Vice and Crime, and crypto is anonymous enough that most people feel comfortable doing so, but TPTB can bust anybody that they choose to. And let whomever they want slide. It allows "anonymous" bribes to take place for those that toe the party line, but they can be crushed at any time if TPTB choose to do so. It's a perfect stick and carrot setup. I wrote a short story called "I Tyrant" some years back where I explained exactly why I, as a Tyrant, would invent crypto if it did not exist. The couple of examples I tossed out are the tip of the iceberg as to why this system is the opposite of what people who think they are sticking it to the man think it is.
Just to be clear: I first got interested in Bitcoin back when I was reading about it on a certain performance PC forum right when it was introduced, and my interest was for the type of reasons you are referring to, but after a few years deep in the community I realized that the whole shebang had been corrupted and wlaked away.
Wait, wait a second… You wrote a SHORT STORY about crypto?? And you ripped off the name from I, Robot?? WOW!! This is seriously the faggiest, most butthurt reaction to crypto I’ve ever heard!! LMAO!!! How long did it take you to write your short story, sweetie? Get any publishers to pick it up yet??
This guy is kinda nuts. You can back him into a corner all you like, he'll just announce he won the argument and start calling you names.
He's made up his mind fer shure but I think he just likes the argument. I get it. it's ok...

It can be forked, which doesn't affect the original blockchain in any way.
Thus far there has not been a 51% attack on any coin of note, but that will change when the economics or political, etc impetus to do so arrives.
As coins get bigger and more popular it gets harder to do a 51% attack, not easier.
The code can be changed, therefore it is not secure. And I have news for you, a 51% attack could be ordered by a single person right now today. His name is Xi.

Toyota corollas are not secure: I could start making another brand of car with faulty breaks.
And I have news for you, a 51% attack could be ordered by a single person right now today. His name is Xi.
Yes, he could cripple the chinese mining industry. Wouldn't do him any good but he could do it.
