I agree with what you said. I don't think the source was really good. It was all I could find from a cursory search.
However, I wish to make you aware of the concept of a crypto-Jew. Not every Jew will simply "announce" their identity, especially the more non-religious ones. They are certainly aware, and very paranoid, of getting found out. They will lie about their ancestry just like they lie about many other things.
