Correct, the state is not the ultimate arbiter of morality (that's French lefty thinking) but also prison itself is a type of selection pressure that has been exerted on the male populace for millennia. Also I wasn't talking about the borderline chimpanzees who fill our prisons and clearly need that pressure to account for the absence of both 20 thousand years of civilization and many millennia of winters.
