I had it happen on my first install on my m.2. Installed 1903 tried to go to 1909. Finished updates, went to restart, and boot sector was hosed.

Why would it ever leave your boot sector in a bad state? You write it once to switch the default boot from old to new. Hopefully that either takes or it doesn't, rather than corrupting your boot sector.
