Hook turn is where you pull over to the left and block the side street, wait until the forward light is red, then go on the green light for the street you want to turn on.

so you dont get cleaned up by trams.

or more to the point, it keeps the middle of the road clear of traffic in built up places. its pretty much only in the middle of the city. everywhere else its either seperate lanes or you have to fucking sit behind trams shitting out people during peak hour or just plain going slow off peak to keep their time schedule.

i can think of one intersection in er.... st kilda where there is a right hand turn lane on the left with its own traffic light but its a rarity.
