For context, they were trying to get close to a bear to take photos, unaware of how dangerous that animal is. If the bear killed them, which is likely, he not only would be liable but he'd have to take care of cleanup. On the show there were several people waiting for him to fuck up so they could use the law against him and try to take his land. He had a fuckton of land but the people that wanted to have it were just going to bulldoze through and build casinos and hotels. They wanted to turn the area into another trashy resort.
