You are absolutely completely wrong about destroying your back. You strengthen your back muscles and more importantly your core, so that your core is supporting the weight of your body during any up and down motion. You are minimally lifting anything, the weight of produce is never lifted during picking. We have had wheelbarrows, carts, bags, and all sorts of inventions for thousands of years.
