I think people cling to this notion of never-ending life because dying is scary and we don't want it to happen to us or our loved ones; but when it inevitably does happen, it feels a lot better to pretend that they have transcended to some paradise realm, bereft of suffering and misery. But that's feeling, not thinking. You want to believe that when you die, you'll "respawn", just like in video games- the alternative is terrifying. "That's it, it's over for me, I'm gone forever, and in 100 years nobody will even know I existed beyond a bit of paperwork if it still exists." Come to terms with it- it will motivate you to make the best of what we have here in "this life".
