When I was a kid my Grandparent guardians made up house rules on the fly, constantly changed them to add confusion and applied them unevenly. I'd get beat for things my older brother could do with impunity, etc. I started picking up books at the local library on proper parenting and then tried sharing the standards with my Grandparents. It didn't go over well and I was labeled "Know it all". Grandma bought me a set of Encyclopedia Britannica to distract me. That backfired as well.
