Being in any "diverse" area will make you a "racist." When I was in my predominately White area I grew up in I had no problem with other races for the most part because there was very little diversity and the ones I ran into were fine and conformed to "White" standards of behavior. Done both and seen it all. Try up around the foot hills north east of Sacramento about an hour. Say, Marysville, Yuba City, Oroville and those areas. When the dependents get their checks they come rolling in from the hills doing exactly what you mentioned. I worked Circle K at various locations and you learn that each ethnic group has their own mannerisms for stealing. Whites come in three types. The sneak thief that's terrified of getting caught and just wants a snack they can't pay for. Mostly homeless kids during their first year on the streets. Then, the angry young white guy who wants to steal a six pack of beer. Something happened, he's totally angry but if you step out of his way and stand back, he won't say a word. Just run out the door with that killer look. And the white guy who furtively glances around. He's all by himself and he's checking to see who's watching. He's hoping to get what he wants without getting caught.

Then the Latinos. They will be friendly to set your mind at ease and then all of them will grab a case of beer, casually saunter up to the register and then run out the door laughing. If they get rounded up by police, they kind of just accept they are going to be seeing a judge and spend some time in jail. They don't plan well and we caught four of them because they went straight home and cops just went to their address based on their license plate. They were drinking the store's beer when cops came knocking on the door. "Who could that be?" must have been what they were thinking.

Blacks, they steal anything. If you challenge them they get angry and threaten you. They insist on their right to buy beer underage. Their usual go to response when you refuse to cooperate with them is to get angry, raise their voice and make threats. Almost always the angry threats and shouting.

BTW, the lone white bandit type, is very rare and they are deliberately close mouthed and try to be quick if they are going to do a beer run. Their goal is surprise, shock and awe and hurry up and run away with their loot. They really don't want confrontation. I got the sense that the two times it was a lone white guy it wasn't so much about stealing beer as some angry response to something that had happened else where.

Then there's high school chicks. They will steal cigarettes hold them proudly aloft and announce what they are stealing, like it's a came of capture the flag. It's so comical I often didn't even bother calling the police. Over a pack of cigs? I'm going to waste police response on some teenaged brat?

My standard approach was to just call in a report to police and make a note of it. General description and what got taken and time of incident.

Truly, it was the blacks that annoyed me the most with the angry shouting and threats. Why? It's like I'm the bad guy for telling them, "no, you can't buy beer" or "Put that shit back if you can't pay for it".

And then there was one guy who came in for beer but his ID said he was a few days away from being of age. I checked his ID, told him thank you as I handed it calmly back to him and took the beer off the counter. "Come back when it's your birthday" He was shocked. Like, who knew I could actually do the math. So he comes back an hour later and tries again. Once more I politely check his ID, hand it back while saying "Thank you!" most politely and take the beer off the counter. "You're still not old enough!". He tried three times in one night before finally giving up. Poor kid.

I worked at a gas station for nine years that was close to a low and no income neighborhood. It is a diversely college city area, and seen most stories shared first hand. It's a mind bending eye opener on how they choose to live and behave this way. You can't fix what they don't want fixed.

I know a guy working retail, they disburse either weekly or bi-weekly now in a rolling sort of way so that all the grocery stores aren't slammed on the first few days in a month. Now they are just sorta constantly busy with NPCs and nogs. Used to be safe grocery shopping at the last week of the month.
