Can confirm. In a microcosm, I was a member of a group that was having serious problems with one of it's leaders. Whenever I tried to push back against him the others were conciliatory and attacked me as an extremist. Eventually he took things too far (committed a #metoo offence) and was sidelined, but the moment that happened they all forgot they had ever defended him or that they had fought me for trying to deal with him. I think I'm the only one who ever apologised for defending him.
