That's a terrible spring. Think about the guys in the woods making flintlock rifles and pistols with far less tools and materials available to them than you can easily find now.... Think hardenable steel, files and a hacksaw, and a propane torch. Coat hangers work well to hold clothes and as welding rods but suck as springs.
