Fake or not, fleeing the scene might have done more harm than good in regards to his chances of arguing self defense... god, what a shit world we live in where goodifying a thief risks prison time.
It could easily be argued he was still in fear of his life (possible accomplices around the corner, etc), and he retreated to a safe place before calling 911. Its a fairly regular thing for self defenders to flee the area for that reason, and never getting charged. Of course it all hinges on calling the police as soon as you can.
He also shot the guy in the back. on camera. His life was not in danger.
Doesn't matter though, this was fake.
Shooting him in the back for stealing your shit is very illegal and dude needs to run
his real mistake was editing the video footage and posting it online

Ignoring the 'is it staged?' question, stop making judgements is this legal or not.
This question 100% depends on the jurisdiction. 'Self defense' isn't _exactly_ the right question here.
For example: In the great state of Texas, this would be a legal shoot.
Back in the day, Texas enacted tough laws against horse thieves. Because, if you still a man's horse, you still his ability to work and his ability to feed himself. So stealing a man's horse, in the eyes of the law, was the same as killing him. So - you are justified in killing a horse thief, even if he is riding away.
... and the same laws now apply to vehicles. So ... you jack my vehicle - I'm allowed to protect both myself and my transportation, with deadly force if required.
