knew it was North of China but i had to pull up a map to try and figure out why people would think it's East of Africa. Couldnt figure that out but Japan about lines up with the southern border of Utah

Not North of China. Southeast of China, sort of off the coast of South China actually.
Thing is most (?..a LOT) of people think it's in the southern hemisphere...along with Phillipines etc. (tropical). Perhaps Tropical is SOUTH to many people? I know I was never given a geography class at all in pubilc school (US).
