Ha yeah well they became nicknames for us because they’re such common names here. St Patrick is obviously our patron saint so there’s always been a lot of Patricks here, and I don’t think I’ve ever known a Patrick who isn’t called Paddy. I think the Mick thing took off in North America cos ye tend to shorten Michael to Mike instead of Mick. I even know Micks from Ireland that became Mike as soon as they moved stateside. I don’t really find either moniker derogatory or offensive though tbh, and often refer to myself as a Paddy.
