The sad thing is it does, anything that threatens the consensus by default threatens democracy. That is why democracy is terrible, 90 people get to force the other 10 to live like them. When those 90 get emotional or are made emotional by external forces, the forcefulness only increases. Socialism is the natural evolution of democracy so I find it particularly funny when super duper patriotic "pro-democracy" people decry it.
