Water particulates, such as those expelled by a sneeze or cough, aren't that small.
But viruses are. Regardless of your thoughts on whether this virus is a thing or not - viruses in general go straight through them.
No they don't because the virus is trapped in the saliva. If viruses went straight through them, doctors would never have worn them.
Which then hits the mask and contaminates it - which you then breathe in for the rest of the time you're wearing it.
They also get turned into Aerosols by the fibres in the mask that then float in the air, maybe it's better than just sneezing in someones face but it isn't a significant help at all.
Of course the holocough is literally just the flu that only kills morbidly obese boomers who are already going to drop dead of a heart attack so this isn't a big deal.
