The movie didn't touch on the Sherrif's backround, but I belive he was a WW2 veteran in the book. ANyone read it?

If the sheriff is a ww2 veteran it completely changes the dynamic. It's understandable why he would be offended by random hippies wearing the USA flag ironically.
