Prius plug in is a better bet. Even a regular Prius. Or a Rav4 Hybrid or plugin, but way lower MPG there.
I sold the Prius Prime for the Leaf. The Prime couldn't do the 100+ miles a day I needed without burning gas. And it still has the maintenance costs of a gas car. It is true that it would be a little cheaper on a cost-per-mile basis if I could get 200k out of the Prius without needing a battery or major repair, but not by a large margin. It's about 4 cents per mile difference. Although, when you factor insurance into it the margin is even smaller. For some reason my insurance company charges 33% more to insure a Prime than a Leaf. The difference over 10 years would add another 2.5 cents per mile cost to the Prime.
