starting is luck to open up some spaces, and then it is just counting and marking around the mines where you think they might be.

i think it means how close i am to danger
if the space has a "3" that means there are 3 mines touching that space. Gets complicated with clusters of different numbers, check out that link in my edit. It is a strategy guide on a minesweeper wiki.
