I bet many of them bough gasoline or diesel powered backup generators. Oh, the irony!
One motivation in our house purchase choice was that it is not "served" by Edison. So we're mostly doing okay. A solar array with battery backup is on the to-do list, but it's an expensive upgrade so I am putting it off until we need a new roof, so that it can all get done in one swell foop.
Because you totally wanted to know that. A diesel backup genset sounds like a sensible addition as well; we'll need to discuss this also. It helps that this is WAY cheaper than the solar/battery monstrosity.
From my research, I've found wind turbines to be more efficient than solar. More up-time on the power gen and greater power/time period.
That was on the hypothetical to-do list also as we do get lots of breeze sometimes. Although I am pretty sure that's not legal here.
Excellent point.
