Yeah, most people don't make the distinction but what they're really saying is that the dye contains a naturally occurring chemical that works against insects, as opposed to artificial chemicals (which are often toxic, though even natural chemicals can be toxic, of course).

I'm just speculating, I don't know what chemical it is in indigo dye that keeps the bugs away.
