The dye is a chemical. That's how it works.
Yeah, most people don't make the distinction but what they're really saying is that the dye contains a naturally occurring chemical that works against insects, as opposed to artificial chemicals (which are often toxic, though even natural chemicals can be toxic, of course).
It's indigo blue. The Japanese have colored their cloth with it for hundreds of years.
