The DeLand Police department said the male victim experienced a hard landing as a result of the malfunctioning parachute.

The number of things that have to go wrong in order for this to happen is high. Someone is going to jail for negligence.

Yep. They made that joke every time I jumped. :-)

And yet another reason I would never and will never exit the aircraft without a reserve (and another reason every jumper should be inspecting/packing their own chute)

It's a simple thing to pack a reserve. Why not do it? Even if you don't pack your own chute, why not at least watch the person who does?

Lot's of experienced jumpers don't pack a reserve. I'm not sure what happened in this particular case. It's still under investigation.
