So I've always used spin reels. I primarily have been a Great Lakes fisherman, and those work great out there.

This year I've been doing a lot of inland lake and river fishing for bass and trout. I'd like to try a baitcaster, but never used one.

Anyone have any recommendations? I already have a nice Fenwick I can put it on.

I do my best baitcasting here on Poal.

Thanks. I'm planning on buying from a local family owned store here. I'll see if they stock these.

If you have never used a bait caster, look into a feature called magnetic braking. It reduces your cast length a little, but prevents the bird nesting that comes with normal bait caster use

Never have. I watched a bit of JewTube about it. Seems like there is a bit of a learning curve, but after watching for a short time I did the typical toxic masculine thing and said fuck it, I'll figure it out when I get it. lol

I'll be sure to ask about the magnetic braking. The guys at the shop here are helpful, but I'm grateful to source some basic knowledge before going in so thank you.

What's your budget?

I'm thinking a 100 bucks.

Hmmm. Just know that you're going to be sacrificing some performance at that price range. My buddy just picked up a $240 Diawa and there's a big difference between that and his old Abu Garcia.

I haven't looked at baitcasters in a while but I'd stay away from anything that doesn't have an easily accessible brake adjustment. My Shimano is behind a little cover on the side and it's a huge pain in the ass to access. Shimano makes good stuff I just hate the brakes.

Another thing to consider is retrieval hand. I got mine from a buddy and it's right hand retrieve. I'm right handed so I'm switching hands constantly while casting and my left hand is retarded so I have a hard time working stuff like a walking bait with my left hand and reeling with my right. See if you can hold left and right retrieve and see if you prefer one or the other.

I suppose I'm not totally against spending that type of money, but my thinking was not to blow the bank just to try this type of reel and see how I like it, but on the other hand there is an argument for if I'm going to do it may as well buy the good shit to start and not 100 now and 240 later.

Good thing to consider.

I found it was more important to have the right kind of line for the reel. Really took some trial and error but IMO spring for some good braided nylon stuff.

Is your Fenwick a baitcast rod? If not you will need one of those. I have 2 pro qualifiers and they work good. Let's makes a few around 100$ I wouldn't spend too much money until you try it for awhile. I still prefer my spinning reels to baitcasters

It is.
