Album(pic8.co)
- Just after beginning.(pic8.co) Cut off the split end, removed shank and collar, started to sand the handle. It had sat out in the sun for a long time.
- After sanding the paint off the hoe.(pic8.co)
- Worked up to a 3/8" hole in the handle.(pic8.co) Collar and hoe ready for paint.
- Galvanizing primer.(pic8.co) IDK if it's right but it's what I had.
- A coat of international harvester red.(pic8.co) It'll probably wear away but hey it looks good now. I left the edge unpainted for abrasion & to sharpen it next weekend. I had to sand down the handle's shaft carefully until the collar fit just right. When the shank goes into the wood it wedges in there with the little wings and forces the wood against the collar so it fits snug. I didn't use any glue or screws or shims.
- A coat of mineral oil.(pic8.co) I could have used linseed if I was patient to wait until next time I'm in town for the hardware store. But this will do.
Next weekend I will sharpen it to just shy of a butter knife edge. That'll be just fine.
